With Tim Tebox, Alex Smith and Cam Newton on his college resume maybe Urban Meyer is a better-than-advertised developer of NFL quarterbacks

Who says former Gators and current Ohio State coach Urban Meyer can’t develop quarterbacks?

And who says Meyer’s college spread doesn’t prepare quarterbacks for the NFL?

Three pro quarterbacks currently making a huge impact in the league — Tim Tebow, Alex Smth and Cam Newton — would beg to differ.

Tim Tebow was the Story of the Year in the NFL, Cam Newton will be the Rookie of the Year and Alex Smith orchestrated one of the most captivating rallies in recent playoff history Saturday when he led his San Francisco 49ers over the New Orleans Saints.

Tebow, of course, won two national titles playing under Meyer with the Florida Gators. Smith led Meyer’s Utah team to an undefeated season before he was picked No. 1 in the NFL draft. Newton ended up transferring from Florida and wound up at Auburn, but Meyer still should get some some credit for helping him become the quarterback he has become.

Who would have ever thought Meyer would have more success developing pro-caliber QBs than former UF coach Steve Spurrier — the quarterback guru who now coaches South Carolina.

To say Spurrier’s resume for developing pro quarterbacks is unimpressive would be a monumental understatement. Here’s all you need to know:  Spurrier most accomplished NFL pupil is Rex Grossman, who has had an erratic pro career alternating between starter and benchwarmer.

There is however one major difference between Meyer and Spurrier. Meyer has never actually coached quarterbacks or been an offensive coordinator while Spurrier has done both throughout his career.

So, technically, I guess you’d have to say that Meyer’s quarterback coaches and offensive coordinators have done a nice job of preparing quarterbacks for the next level.
